a race in which any horse entered can be purchased by anyone who has made a bid before the race.
Origin of claiming race:
a horse race in which each owner declares before the race at what price his horse will be offered for sale after the race
A race in which the competing horse can be claimed by anyone at the specified claiming price for the race.
