chara
Chara is a genus of submerged, green, fresh-water, algae plants found all over the world. These plants have stems and branches, though they lack vascular tissue, true roots, and do not produce flowers or seeds. They are informally known as stoneworts due to their gritty textures caused by lime deposits on their cell walls. Chara also plays an important role in the ecosystem by producing oxygen and providing habitat for many small aquatic organisms.
