Origin: A mistaken translation of τὰ σῦκα σῦκα, τὴν σκάφην δὲ σκάφην ὀνομάσων ('calling figs figs, and a trough a trough'). The word σκάφη was mistranslated by the medieval scholar Desiderius Erasmus as σκαφείον.
