    There's way more to this than just a red pimple. Its the name the Spanish gave to a syphlitic welt, mainly on the face. A cross between a "carbunkle" and a "bubos", the latter word coming from the Plague that ravaged Europe. Syphilis also ravaged Europe not long after the return of Columbus.
