Bad Hair Day
Bad Hair Day is the ninth studio album by "Weird Al" Yankovic, released in 1996. It was the third studio album self-produced by Yankovic. The musical styles on the album are built around parodies and pastiches of pop and rock music of the mid-1990s, largely targeting alternative rock and hip-hop alike. The album's lead single, "Amish Paradise", which lampoons both Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" and the Amish lifestyle, was a hit, charting at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album produced an array of hit comedy singles, including "Amish Paradise" and "Gump", a parody of The Presidents of the United States of America's "Lump" that also parodies Forrest Gump. The other half of the album is original material, featuring many "style parodies," or musical imitations of existing artists. These style parodies include imitations of specific artists like They Might Be Giants and Elvis Costello. "Amish Paradise" caused a minor controversy after it was revealed that Coolio was not pleased that his original song was spoofed by Yankovic, although the two later made amends. Bad Hair Day was met with mostly positive reviews, with many critics praising "Amish Paradise". The album peaked at number fourteen on the Billboard 200. "Amish Paradise" went on to become one of Yankovic's best-known singles, and it peaked at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bad Hair Day sold 1,317,000 copies in the US in 1996 alone. It is the highest sales tally for any comedy album in a single calendar year since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. Bad Hair Day was Yankovic's sixth Gold record, and went on to be certified Platinum for sales of over one million copies in the United States. The album also went Platinum in Canada.
