a strong fortress in the province of Beira, on the Spanish frontier of Portugal.

A strong fortress of Portugal, in the province of Beira. The capture of it by the Duke of Wellington, in 1811, after it had fallen into the hands of the French, was deemed a very brilliant exploit.
