VOG
VOG stands for Volcanic Ash Advisory to the Aviation Community. It refers to a system of providing timely information to pilots and aviation authorities about the location, movement, and concentration of volcanic ash in the atmosphere. This information is crucial for the safety of flights, as volcanic ash can pose significant risks to aircraft engines and other on-board systems. VOG helps aviation professionals make informed decisions regarding flight routes, altitudes, and potential diversions to ensure the safety of air travel in areas affected by volcanic activity.
Wikidata
Vog
Vog is a form of air pollution that results when sulfur dioxide and other gases and particles emitted by an erupting volcano react with oxygen and moisture in the presence of sunlight. The word is a portmanteau of the words "volcanic","smog", and "fog". The term is in common use in the Hawaiian islands, where the Kīlauea volcano, on Hawaiʻi Island, has been erupting continuously since 1983. Based on June 2008 measurements, Kīlauea emits 2,000 - 4,000 tons of sulfur dioxide every day.
