    Timbuctoo is a series of 25 children's books, written and illustrated by Roger Hargreaves, better known for his Mr. Men series. It was published from 1978–79. The books tell the stories of a group of animals, each of whom is named after the sound that they make. An animated series of Timbuctoo was shown on CITV in 1997, featuring the voices of Ronnie Corbett and Kerry Shale. In North America, the voices are done by Len Carlson, Alyson Court, Neil Crone, Catherine Disher, Judy Marshak, and Ron Rubin.

    an important city of the Western Soudan, situated at the edge of the Sahara, 8 m. N. of the Upper Niger, at the centre of five caravan routes which lead to all parts of North Africa; carries on a large transit trade, exchanging European goods for native produce; was occupied by the French in 1894.

    A celebrated city in the interior of Africa, on the slope of a hill about 8 miles south of the Niger. It is said to have been built by Mansa Suleiman, a Mohammedan, about 1214, and was frequently subjugated by the sovereigns of Morocco. Since 1727 it has been partially independent.
