    Southgate is a suburban city in Wayne County, Michigan in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 30,047 at the 2010 census. Southgate officially became a city in October 1958, ending Ecorse Township, Michigan.

    Two types of Southgate /Southgait. The southgait's often walked the roads to keep them open from the Olde english word gait to walk or stride. The Southgate's defended travellers on the road or were gate keepers on the main south to north roads.

    There are still large numbers of southgates in Norwich Norfolk and london. Back in the time of the rebuilding of london from the great fire quite a few roads south into london were stopping people coming in. One of those areas was later name Southgate.
