Romanism
Romanism is a derogatory term for Roman Catholicism used when anti-Catholicism was more common in the United States. The term was frequently used in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century Republican invectives against the Democrats, as part of the slogan "Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion" (referencing the Democratic party's constituency of Southerners and anti-Temperance, frequently Catholic, working-class immigrants). The term and slogan gained particular prominence in the 1884 presidential campaign and again in 1928, in which the Democratic candidate was the outspokenly anti-Prohibition Catholic Governor of New York Al Smith. The term was also used by Democratic Unionist Party founder Ian Paisley in anti-Catholic speeches

Romanism generally refers to the beliefs, customs, practices, traditions or a system of ideas associated primarily with the Roman Catholic Church. It particularly emphasizes the authority of the Pope and the roman doctrines. Sometimes, it can also be used in a derogatory way by Protestant groups to indicate disagreement with these doctrines or views. Furthermore, it may refer to the art, culture, history, or influence from Ancient Rome. The specific context often determines the exact meaning.

Romanism
Romanism was the style of painting of a group of artists in the late 15th and early 16th century from the Netherlands who began to visit Italy and started to incorporate Renaissance influences in their work. The greatest artist in the style was Jan Mabuse. The influence of Michelangelo and Raphael showed in the use of mythology and nudity in the paintings. Antwerp Mannerism is a term for rather earlier Italian influence in Netherlandish art, as seen in the earlier works of Mabuse. This remained much closer to Early Netherlandish painting.
