Wikidata

  1. Quantum gravity

Quantum gravity is a field of theoretical physics that seeks to unify quantum mechanics, which describes three of the four known fundamental interactions, with general relativity, which describes the fourth fundamental interaction, gravity. The aim of quantum gravity is only to describe the quantum behavior of the gravitational field and should not be confused with the objective of unifying all fundamental interactions into a single mathematical framework. The two problems could be connected or could be separated. Such a theory of quantum gravity would yield the same predictions as ordinary quantum mechanics in conditions of weak gravity and the same results as Einsteinian general relativity for phenomena where quantum effects can be disregarded, namely at scales larger than the Planck's constant, but would also be able to describe the physics of the situations where both quantum effects and strong-field gravity are important. A theory of quantum gravity which is also a grand unification of all known interactions, is sometimes referred to as a theory of everything or a unified field theory.²−2330
