  1. Partial thromboplastin time

    The partial thromboplastin time or activated partial thromboplastin time is a performance indicator measuring the efficacy of both the "intrinsic" and the common coagulation pathways. Apart from detecting abnormalities in blood clotting, it is also used to monitor the treatment effects with heparin, a major anticoagulant. It is used in conjunction with the prothrombin time which measures the extrinsic pathway. Kaolin cephalin clotting time is a historic name for the activated partial thromboplastin time.

  1. Partial Thromboplastin Time

    The time required for the appearance of FIBRIN strands following the mixing of PLASMA with phospholipid platelet substitute (e.g., crude cephalins, soybean phosphatides). It is a test of the intrinsic pathway (factors VIII, IX, XI, and XII) and the common pathway (fibrinogen, prothrombin, factors V and X) of BLOOD COAGULATION. It is used as a screening test and to monitor HEPARIN therapy.
