Military Dictionary and Gazetteer

  1. indians

The name by which the various tribes of aborigines scattered over the extensive continent of America are distinguished. They are divided into numerous tribes and nations, all in a state more or less savage, and having all the peculiar characteristics of that kind of life. They generally decline as the civilized population advances into the country; though reservations of land have always been set apart by the U. S. government for the support of tribes within its territory. (See Indians and their Agencies.) A short description of the most important tribes will be found under appropriate headings in this work.

I am the only descendant of Indians who were missionized at any of the 21 California missions who is currently in a position of responsibility at one of those missions. So it's a unique situation, and it's one that I would hope in the next 20 or 30 years changes.

  2. Valentin Lopez:

We were raised not to say anything bad about the Catholic religion, but at the same time, we can't stay quiet about this. It's like the altar boy scandal. All the people who stayed quiet about the altar boy scandal, how do they feel now? it seems like the church is doing all it can to separate Serra from the atrocities and deaths and what happened to the Indians, but that does not work.

  3. John Wayne:

I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves

  4. Steve Fitzgerald:

Ask the blacks about slavery. Ask the American Indians, ask -- well, of course, American Indians were doing it to each other. The whites were doing it to each other. But if you go all back in history, we have never had much compunction about killing each other, especially if you couldn't fight back.

  5. Samit Aich:

The question here is why are 340 people facing the loss of their jobs? Is it because we talked about pesticide-free tea, air pollution, and a cleaner, fairer future for all Indians? the home minister is trying to strangle us by stealth, because he knows an outright ban is unconstitutional. We ask him to confirm that he is trying to close Greenpeace India and suppress our voice.
