A data structure in LISP that is a pair of pointers, car and cdr, used mainly for lists.
consverb
To obtain a list from a cons or a nesting of conses; to prepend an element to a list by forming a cons of that element and the list; to obtain a list from a smaller one by repeated application of such kind of prepending.

cons
In computer programming, cons is a fundamental function in most dialects of the Lisp programming language. cons constructs memory objects which hold two values or pointers to values. These objects are referred to as cells, conses, non-atomic s-expressions, or pairs. In Lisp jargon, the expression "to cons x onto y" means to construct a new object with. The resulting pair has a left half, referred to as the car, and a right half, referred to as the cdr. It is loosely related to the object-oriented notion of a constructor, which creates a new object given arguments, and more closely related to the constructor function of an algebraic data type system. The word "cons" and expressions like "to cons onto" are also part of a more general functional programming jargon. Sometimes operators that have a similar purpose, especially in the context of list processing, are pronounced "cons".
The New Hacker's Dictionary
cons
[from LISP] 1. vt. To add a new element to a specified list, esp. at the top. “OK, cons picking a replacement for the console TTY onto the agenda.” 2. cons up: vt. To synthesize from smaller pieces: “to cons up an example”.In LISP itself, cons is the most fundamental operation for building structures. It takes any two objects and returns a dot-pair or two-branched tree with one object hanging from each branch. Because the result of a cons is an object, it can be used to build binary trees of any shape and complexity. Hackers think of it as a sort of universal constructor, and that is where the jargon meanings spring from.
